I am pleased to offer you admission to the Ph.D. program in Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology. If you accept this offer, we will provide you a full package of financial support, as described below. I apologize for the lateness of this offer, and its arrival by e-mail. Your application was always considered excellent, but we were unsure of our ability to support you financially until very recently.
You will be awarded a Graduate Research Assistantship of $17,750 for the first year, and a waiver of your tuition valued at $19,260. The monetary value of the award will be the same or greater in subsequent years, depending, of course, on satisfactory progress toward your doctoral degree. The total stipend of your award is taxable, but the tuition portion is not taxable.
It is possible that you have already made other plans for graduate school, and I apologize if this offer is too late to help you. Please let me know within 7 days if you are able to accept our offer, and I will instruct our Graduate Office to send you an official letter with the terms of this message.
We the faculty in Materials Science congratulate you on your excellent scholarship, and we hope you will accept our offer.
